Two Tips for Perfect Curtain Rods

My mentor Maria Killam is offering her latest color seminars. They were truly eye-opening and if you are a designer I highly recommend them. In fact, she used my testimonial in her latest blog post about choosing curtain rods.

Check it out at www.MariaKillam.com

So my first tip is if you are looking for the right size and color look at her blog post.

My second tip is if you want something super cheap, use electrical conduit pipes from the hardware store. On 8 foot section is about $3 and they will cut it for you to the correct length for FREE! Then you can just spray paint it!

I used it along with inexpensive curtain rod holders on each end of the room to go wall-to-wall in this challenging space:

Master Bathroom Renovation Reveal

Here are the photos of one of my latest projects. We took a master bathroom from contemporary early 2000s (earthtones, black/brown granite) to a clean, fresh classic meets contemporary of today white and gray.

Lest you forget what this used to look like, here it is:

Master Bathroom Original

We did an interim update of painting the cabinet, adding new mirrors, and painting walls an off white.

And here is the AFTER again…. some more photos of the rest of the bathroom. We used quartz composite countertops, Carrara Marble floors, and Thassos White Marble for the shower walls.

We added a tall storage cabinet along the shower wall.

Eventually there will be some bold, bright art on this large grey wall!

There will be glass installed eventually, but it is easier to see the shower now without any glass doors.

I had the plumber split the water lines behind the wall and then install two separate systems for the rainshower and the hand held shower. That way they can both be on at full strength at the same time. Otherwise what is often done is to use a diverter switch to change from one to the other. But isn’t it much more luxurious to have the ability to use two at the same time?

Shower before:

Old Master Shower. It had three tones of beige and 5 other colors. The river rock felt terrible as it was hard to stand on for a long time.

And another look at the AFTER!

Here's a last look at the sink wall, where we added a second sink and a lot more storage!

One thing homeowners want is more storage in the bathroom. We were able to create EIGHT times more storage as well as install a second sink in this bathroom, all without using up more of the floor space. Using space going UP is key.

What’s so great about Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year Radiant Orchid?

Pantone made its big announcement today that its 2014 Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid.

What’s so interesting about that?

Most interior designers and bloggers are not that excited about it. Of course, a few are, but really, when was the last time you walked into a house with a lavender living room? The most I see is an occasional bedroom (it would be lovely in a master bedroom and I have a similar color in my daughter’s bedroom).

From a fashion standpoint, the color makes more sense as it can enliven your wardrobe with a punch of color and it works well with both silver and gold accents!

What I notice is that it’s the first time in several years that a color with a hint of grey in it (a “dirty” or “earthy” color) has been used.

Granted, it’s not SUPER earthy, but it is definitely a bit toned down as well as lighter than the past few years’ worth of super bright colors, which you could totally pair together, while Radiant Orchid would look out of place!

So to me, that signals that even though this pretty lavender color still works with the “it” neutral grey,

it is a first step back toward the earth tones that will eventually bring back beiges and browns again!

In fact, it might be just the thing to update your espresso brown leather sofa!

What do you think? Will this be the beginning of the end for GREY????

Benjamin Moore 2014 Color Palette

Every year various paint and color consulting companies project what they think the upcoming trends will be. This year Benjamin Moore, the paint company I use as the basis for my color consulting, chose a fresh, soft palette with what they are calling “The New Neutrals”. The colors are soft and like pastels but with a slightly muted undertone to keep them more sophisticated and less like “Easter Egg” or “Candy”. Benjamin Moore 2014 Color Palette jpg I think the colors in your home should reflect your personality and desires. However, knowing that these colors are up-and-coming can help you determine what direction you want to take when mixing in your own favorites! Keep in mind when buying finishes such as tile, countertops, carpet, and large furniture items, that these items will boss around the entire look of each room and they are crucial to get correct!
